An OVHcloud VPS Alternative in the United States
OVHcloud's current VPS line is extremely strong on raw specifications. LayerOne's case is hourly Tampa hosting and a smaller operator relationship—not a spec-sheet win.

The short answer
On raw advertised resources, OVHcloud's current US VPS line is difficult for LayerOne to beat. Its VPS-1 was listed at $4.54/month with two vCores, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe, unlimited traffic, a 500 Mbps public port, anti-DDoS, IPv4 and IPv6, and one daily restore point.
LayerOne is an OVH VPS alternative for a narrower reason: hourly usage from prepaid credit, Tampa placement, higher advertised port ceilings, and a direct relationship with a small US operator. It is not the answer if the most RAM, NVMe, and included traffic per dollar decide the purchase.
What are we actually comparing?
OVHcloud's displayed US VPS-2 was $8.50/month for 4 vCores, 8 GB RAM, 75 GB NVMe, unlimited traffic, and a 1 Gbps port. These are starting prices; checkout and commitment length matter. OVHcloud supports month-to-month and longer terms, with discounts and early-cancellation obligations on committed services.
The included backup is one restore point from the previous 24 hours. A rolling seven-day backup option and snapshots cost extra. Local Zone VPS has a narrower feature set: among other limits, it lacks Windows, additional storage, extra IPs, load balancers, and managed databases, and it blocks outbound SMTP ports 25, 465, and 587.
OVHcloud publishes a 99.9% monthly VPS SLA. Its terms measure eligible downtime from the time the customer opens a support case, and the remedy is service credit rather than a promise of zero downtime.
Advertised vCPU counts, storage labels, and port speeds are specifications, not benchmark results. Different host CPUs, contention policies, storage systems, and network paths can make similar-looking plans behave differently. We have not invented a score or run a one-off benchmark and called it universal.
When OVHcloud is the better choice
- You prioritize raw RAM, NVMe storage, unmetered traffic, anti-DDoS, IPv6, and an included daily restore point at the lowest advertised price.
- You need OVHcloud's global facilities, broad US Local Zone list, Public Cloud services, or surrounding storage and network products.
- You want a standard VPS option with current port speeds up to several gigabits and do not need hourly destruction to end a short job.
- You can administer the server yourself. OVHcloud describes its VPS as self-managed, just as LayerOne customers own their guest operating systems.
When LayerOne may fit better
- Tampa is the desired city and the measured network path beats OVHcloud's available location for your users.
- You need a short-lived server and prefer hourly credit usage without taking a monthly or multi-year service term.
- You value direct access to a smaller infrastructure team more than OVHcloud's scale and breadth.
- You need a 2.5 Gbps general or 10 Gbps network-optimized port and your own sustained test—not the port label—shows it helps.
LayerOne's current 1 GB gc.nano plan is $3.00/month equivalent, with one vCPU, 20 GB Enterprise SAS SSD, and a dedicated IPv4. General Compute has a 2.5 Gbps port; Network Optimized plans have a 10 Gbps port. Transfer is an account pool: 2 TB included per account, plus 500 GB for each server, shared across the pool. Additional transfer is $3.00/TB per calendar month.
LayerOne's limits, plainly
- One live region: LayerOne deploys in Tampa today. If Tampa is the wrong network location for your users, choose a provider closer to them.
- No platform backups or snapshots yet: keep tested, off-server copies. Support has no hidden snapshot to restore.
- No IPv6 yet: every public VPS has IPv4, but an IPv6 requirement rules LayerOne out today.
- A smaller product catalog: LayerOne does not currently offer managed databases, managed Kubernetes, object storage, GPUs, or a global region fleet.
- SAS SSD rather than NVMe: the public plans use Enterprise SAS SSD. If local NVMe throughput is a hard requirement, buy it from a provider that offers it.
Compare the whole invoice
For OVHcloud, choose the country site, VPS generation, location, and commitment before recording the price. Add seven-day backup retention, snapshots, extra IPs, support, and taxes as needed. For LayerOne, add an external backup service and transfer beyond the pooled allowance. OVHcloud currently wins the basic 4 GB and 8 GB spec-sheet comparison; LayerOne must earn the choice through location, billing fit, or service relationship.
For LayerOne, also account for the prepaid-credit model. Servers draw credit hourly while they exist. Destroying a server stops future runtime charges, but unused account credit stays on the account unless a refund is approved under the Terms.
Test before moving production
- Run the LayerOne looking glass and the other provider's network test from the places your users actually are.
- Deploy the smallest sensible test VM with the same operating system and application. Measure response time, CPU steal, disk latency, and packet loss over several busy and quiet periods.
- Calculate a 30-day total including IPv4, backups, transfer, taxes, support, setup charges, and any annual commitment or renewal price.
- Restore a real backup into the test VM before changing DNS. A backup that has never been restored is only a hope.
Bottom line
Choose OVHcloud when specifications, unlimited traffic, included daily recovery, IPv6, or global scale lead the decision. Consider LayerOne for an hourly Tampa deployment or a smaller operator relationship. If LayerOne cannot demonstrate a concrete advantage for your workload, OVHcloud is the more rational purchase.
