An IONOS VPS Alternative: Introductory Pricing Explained

The short answer

IONOS's $4 Linux headline was real when checked, but it was an introductory rate for the first three months of a one-year term. The same Linux VPS M+ page displayed $11/month starting after month three. Both numbers belong in an honest comparison.

LayerOne is an IONOS VPS alternative for buyers who prefer standard-catalog hourly prepaid usage without an automatic three-month price step-up. IONOS remains the stronger fit for Windows, unlimited transfer, IPv6, a broader business-hosting suite, and its advertised support and availability package.

What are we actually comparing?

The displayed Linux VPS M+ included four vCores, 4 GB RAM, and 120 GB NVMe at $4/month for three months with a one-year term, then a displayed regular price of $11/month. Windows is sold on a separate page at different prices: Windows M+ was shown at $28/month for three months and $35/month afterward when checked.

IONOS listed unlimited traffic up to 1 Gbps, DDoS protection, one IPv4, an IPv6 /80, 24/7 support, and 99.99% availability. Its VPS page identifies a United States location option but does not name the exact US metro.

Cloud Backup starts at a separate per-GB rate. The VPS is a contract product: deleting it in the control panel is disabled, and cancellation follows the minimum term and notice period. IONOS support covers its platform and defined server issues, not unlimited application administration or third-party software debugging.

Advertised vCPU counts, storage labels, and port speeds are specifications, not benchmark results. Different host CPUs, contention policies, storage systems, and network paths can make similar-looking plans behave differently. We have not invented a score or run a one-off benchmark and called it universal.

When IONOS is the better choice

• The promotional and post-intro prices both fit your budget, and you are comfortable with a one-year commitment.
• You need Windows Server, IPv6, NVMe, unlimited transfer, or the broader IONOS website, domain, email, and business-service portfolio.
• You value IONOS's advertised 99.99% availability and formal 24/7 support scope.
• You want an optional per-GB cloud-backup product rather than building an off-server backup workflow from scratch.

When LayerOne may fit better

• You want the standard catalog's hourly rate rather than an introductory period followed by an automatic higher rate after month three.
• You need a temporary VPS and want destruction to stop runtime usage without canceling a contract.
• Tampa is the right network location and your application is Linux-based, so IONOS's Windows and broader bundle provide no value.
• You prefer a smaller operator and accept the lower 99.9% SLA, single region, lack of IPv6, SAS SSD, and no platform backup product.

LayerOne's current 1 GB gc.nano plan is $3.00/month equivalent, with one vCPU, 20 GB Enterprise SAS SSD, and a dedicated IPv4. General Compute has a 2.5 Gbps port; Network Optimized plans have a 10 Gbps port. Transfer is an account pool: 2 TB included per account, plus 500 GB for each server, shared across the pool. Additional transfer is $3.00/TB per calendar month.

LayerOne's limits, plainly

• One live region: LayerOne deploys in Tampa today. If Tampa is the wrong network location for your users, choose a provider closer to them.
• No platform backups or snapshots yet: keep tested, off-server copies. Support has no hidden snapshot to restore.
• No IPv6 yet: every public VPS has IPv4, but an IPv6 requirement rules LayerOne out today.
• A smaller product catalog: LayerOne does not currently offer managed databases, managed Kubernetes, object storage, GPUs, or a global region fleet.
• SAS SSD rather than NVMe: the public plans use Enterprise SAS SSD. If local NVMe throughput is a hard requirement, buy it from a provider that offers it.

Compare the whole invoice

For IONOS, calculate the whole minimum term: introductory months, post-intro months, taxes, Windows or control-panel licensing, backup storage, and extra IPv4 addresses. Read the cancellation notice period before ordering. For LayerOne, calculate hourly credit consumption, off-server backup storage, and transfer beyond the account pool.

For LayerOne, also account for the prepaid-credit model. Servers draw credit hourly while they exist. Destroying a server stops future runtime charges, but unused account credit stays on the account unless a refund is approved under the Terms.

Test before moving production

1. Run the LayerOne looking glass and the other provider's network test from the places your users actually are.
2. Deploy the smallest sensible test VM with the same operating system and application. Measure response time, CPU steal, disk latency, and packet loss over several busy and quiet periods.
3. Calculate a 30-day total including IPv4, backups, transfer, taxes, support, setup charges, and any annual commitment or renewal price.
4. Restore a real backup into the test VM before changing DNS. A backup that has never been restored is only a hope.

Bottom line

Choose IONOS when the promotion and term work, or when Windows, unlimited transfer, IPv6, NVMe, and its broader support package matter. Consider LayerOne for transparent hourly use in Tampa and a smaller-provider relationship. LayerOne is simpler, not more feature-rich.
