Reverse DNS and PTR Records: What a VPS Owner Should Check
Reverse DNS names an IP address. Learn why it has different authority from your domain and how to verify both directions.
Forward DNS answers which address belongs to a hostname. Reverse DNS asks which hostname is associated with an address. A PTR record supplies that reverse name. It can make network logs easier to interpret and is one of several signals relevant to operating mail infrastructure. It does not create a website, issue a certificate, or prove that a server is trustworthy.
Understand who can publish the record
The authority for reverse DNS follows the IP address allocation. Owning example.com lets you manage records within that domain through its DNS provider, but it does not let you publish the PTR for any address you choose. The address provider or an appropriately delegated operator controls the corresponding reverse zone.
On LayerOne, customer reverse-DNS changes are tied to addresses held by the account. Availability depends on the configured reverse-DNS service. The hostname must resolve forward to the address before a customer PTR change can be published. If the control is unavailable, consult support instead of adding a PTR to an unrelated forward zone and expecting it to take effect.
Choose a stable, meaningful hostname
A name such as host1.example.com is easier to maintain than a name tied to a short-lived application release. Choose a domain you control and a hostname that does not reveal sensitive project details. Create the forward A record pointing to the assigned IPv4, wait until it resolves correctly, and only then request the reverse association.
Changing the Linux machine's local hostname is a separate operation. It may affect prompts, logs, and application behavior, but it does not publish a PTR by itself. Keep the local hostname, forward DNS, and reverse DNS in your inventory as related settings with distinct owners.
Verify the relationship in both directions
Use dig -x 203.0.113.10 as the shape of a reverse lookup, replacing the documentation address with your own assigned address. Then query the returned hostname's A record. The expected relationship is that the reverse name resolves forward to the original address. Preserve the complete answers when asking for help, including TTLs and the time of the test.
Suppose the PTR names oldhost.example.com while the forward record now points elsewhere. Correct the intended records through their respective owners. Merely changing the application's public URL leaves this mismatch in place. When relinquishing an address, review dependencies that still refer to it so a future holder does not inherit assumptions made by your monitoring or integrations.
Keep expectations proportional
A matching PTR and forward record are useful configuration checks, not an email-delivery guarantee. Mail policy, authentication, sending practices, reputation, and recipient decisions remain separate. For a normal HTTPS application, a correct browser hostname and certificate are usually more directly relevant than the name returned by a reverse lookup.
